National N Diploma: Electrical Engineering

DURATION: 1 Trimester Per Level (10 Weeks Plus Exams)
LEVELS: N1 – N6
INTAKES: January, May & August

Provision of a formal qualification that will equip and prepare an individual effectively to pursue an opportunity in the many different work areas of Electricity or Electronics. Examples are domestic installations and maintenance, repairing and maintenance of consumer equipment, installation and maintenance of business premises and the functioning and maintenance of high voltage electrical networks within a company like Eskom. This course also serves as a basis to gaining further qualifications at other tertiary institutions.

The electrical engineer is involved in the design, manufacture, installation and management of various appliances and installations that generate or use electrical energy such as coal power stations where chemical energy is transformed to electrical energy, the use of solar cells and wind turbines for the generation of electrical energy, or transmission lines and substations that are used to distribute electrical energy for power, heating and lighting. The electrical engineer tests and maintains electrical subsystems and systems, is involved in analysis and problem formulation, conducts research to improve the use of energy resources, designs and develops new components, or is responsible for managing projects

What Subjects Will I be Taking?

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics N1-N3 resides on the equivalent level of Grade 10-12 at school. The content is presented with an engineering approach in conjunction with a highly supported integrated dimension for the other three subjects that follow. The mathematical subject provides an opportunity to gain a better understanding and enhance practical skills in a work environment.

ENGINEERING SCIENCE

A tradesman will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering principles. By using calculations and theory, the student will develop an understanding of abstract atomic theory. Furthermore, the student will obtain knowledge and understanding of how an electrical current together with materials, matter and gasses influences changes and enhances the provision of electronically controlled equipment for use and consumption.

ELECTRICAL TRADE THEORY (N1-N2) & ELECTRO-TECHNOLOGY N3

Educates students regarding electrical wiring of buildings, stationary machines and related equipment. Electricians may be equipped in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure, domestic and/or businesses. Electricians may also specialise in wiring ships, airplanes and other mobile platforms as well as data and cable.

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS

To obtain theoretical knowledge in installing, calibrating, maintaining and programming computerised equipment and instruments used in automation, telemetry and robotics.
